Proportion of articles that mention Canada in their titles or abstracts.
Data for this article were retrieved from the Dimensions and OpenAlex databases (Herzog et al., 2020 ; Priem et al., 2022). We examined all articles indexed in Dimensions published in a Canadian journal or written by a Canadian author for the period between 1990 and 2024.
Language information was retrieved from OpenAlex, and matching between Dimensions and OpenAlex was based on Digital Object Identifier (DOI).
To identify whether an article pertained to a Canadian topic, we searched the articles’ title and abstract for the name of Canadian provinces and territories, in both English and French, as well as the terms “Canada”, “Canadian”, ”Canadien”, and “Canadienne”. This coarse method is expected to have high precision but low recall, thereby offering an undercounting of articles about Canadian topics. For ease of reading, we refer to articles that refer to Canada, Canadian, a province or territory, in either English or French, as having mentioned “Canada.”
Canadian institutions were obtained using the ROR codes reported by OpenAlex for Canadian authors. Institution types are those defined by ROR.
